Guide to Hammamet

Hammamet, 65 kilometres southeast of Tunis, combines a taste of North Africa with the facilities of a well-established, cosmopolitan resort, complete with a vast sandy beach and two golf courses. You can still immerse yourself in local culture by haggling in the Medina's souks, or visiting ancient Carthage or Tunis, the capital.

Beaches

The resort boasts a vast stretch of white, sandy beach. Lifeguard beach patrols are in place during the summer making this a popular retreat for families.

Eating out

Hammamet has some good restaurants and open-air terraces mainly concentrated around the resort centre. Here you will find a range of international cuisine on offer, as well as some traditional Tunisian favourites.

Nightlife

For live entertainment or a disco, simply head for the hotels. Most of the bars in town close at midnight and are a great place to start the evenings entertainment, or to relax with a beer.

Shopping

Pay a visit to the Medina's souks which offer a range of local wares, including jewellery and ceramics. Bartering is a way of life here, and is something that has to be experienced. If the bustle of street bartering is all too much, you can take a more relaxed browse around the various hotel shops which offer a similar range of goods.

Local information

You can immerse yourself in local culture by haggling in the Medina's souks, which are full of pottery, kaftans and pungent spices. Two golf courses are also available nearby. For those wishing to go further afield, there are the salt lakes and oasis towns to experience, or even take a day out to visit the capital Tunis.
