An introduction to Althea Village Hotel

Those who wish to be close enough to Chania to enjoy its cosmopolitan attractions to the full without forfeiting easy access to a sandy beach, 2 swimming pools and 2 children's pools, may find that the Althea Village Hotel really does offer the best of both worlds. Standing in its own extensive grounds amidst olive and fruit trees in the western outskirts of Chania, the Althea Village is just 3km from the bustling town centre and the delightful Venetian harbour. The nearest sandy beach, Agios Apostolis, is just a 15-20 minute walk downhill and is one of our favourite beaches along this stretch of coast - a deeply sheltered sandy cove framed by two herb-scented, rocky headlands. Closer still is a selection of shops and tavernas as well as the bus stop for the frequent service between Chania and Kastelli, which makes Kato Daratso an ideal base for exploring by public transport. And you've got easy access by car to the whole of western Crete via the Chania bypass road which runs close to the hotel.
However, we did not include the hotel in our programme purely on the merit of its convenient location, as it is also an extremely attractive place to stay. The Althea Village has been thoughtfully designed, with its 64 rooms and suites contained in two-storey, whitewashed buildings dotted around stone-paved courtyards and staircases. The rooms are decorated in traditional Cretan style and each has its own private terrace or balcony, en suite bathroom with half-bath and the all-important fridge for keeping your drinks cool. Heating and air-conditioning are included to make your stay more comfortable.

The hotel's most becoming feature, however, must be its wonderfully mature gardens, which not only surround the large swimming pool with its shallow section for children, but also the guestrooms. Wherever you look you will be delighted by the joyful colours of bougainvillaea, oleander, geraniums and roses, while the sweet scent of jasmine fills the air.
Perhaps the main reason that our long relationship with the Althea Village has been such a happy one is the fact that the two brothers who own the hotel are constantly carrying out improvements, so that the hotel becomes more appealing with every season. They've not only extended and remodelled the already impressive swimming pool, but also created a splendid taverna, games room and a separate poolside coffee bar, cleverly constructed to make a central feature of the twisted trunk of an ancient olive tree which is at least 400 years old, on the adjacent plot of land. Guests have a choice of bed and breakfast or half board accommodation. The hotel now also boasts a mini-gym with up-to-date equipment for both cardiovascular and resistance exercises, and an internet cafe.
Most of the Althea's staff have been with the hotel for some years, so the service is genuinely friendly and attentive, just one more reason why the Althea Village has become such a popular choice, attracting many guests to return year after year.
