An introduction to Hotel Venus

Let's face it – catching buses and hailing cabs is the last thing you want to do on holiday. So if you want to be footsteps away from Benidorm's top-notch attractions, check into the smart-looking Venus. Shops, bars and restaurants are literally on your doorstep. And when you want a spell on the crumbly stuff, the beach is just a few flip-flopped-minutes walk. But just because you're at the heart of the action, doesn't mean you can't relax. Just step through the elegant lobby, complete with a statue of, you guessed it, Venus – and you're not only greeted by friendly English-speaking staff. Cue tropical-style gardens with palm trees that look like exploding fireworks. Shady patios where you can sit with an ice-cold drink or cafe con leche. And a sprawling spilt-level sun terrace dotted with sun beds and parasols. It's a welcome sight away from the hustle and bustle of Benidorm's lively streets. At the heart of it all is the large figure-of-eight-shaped swimming pool. With a water feature, a small section for kids to splash about in and the Oasis Summer Bar on hand - it'll be hard to drag yourself away. If you want to stretch your legs though, there are pool tables and table tennis. Or head over to sister hotel the Orange and sign up for the Dance Academy. After dark, Benidorm's neon lights blaze into life, but if you fancy a night in you won't be disappointed. Linger over a delicious meal in the buffet restaurant for starters. Everything on the menu is courtesy of skilled chef Jean Marc Sanz, so it's first-rate fare night after night. Then retreat to the Dracma Cafe and listen to live music or feast your eyes over the cabaret-style shows in the lounge. A great all-rounder at the heart of Benidorm's buzz, the Venus knows how to throw a holiday. And you won't need to step on a bus once.

My wife and I are in our 60s but are young at heart but have always avoided places like Benidorm due to its reputation but went there in June/July and stayed at the Venus Hotel and had the best holiday ever. We were right in the centre of everything... more on this review
